…and I hack it [Mitsubishi MMCS HDD removal guide] November 5, 2008

This is a step by step guide on how to extract Mitsubishi Multi Communication System hard disk drive (HDD).

Ok, let’s start.
Step 1.
Press both SET and NAVI buttons and hold for about 5 seconds. Service Mode menu should appear. Go to Versions Indication. Note Loader version. You will need it later on.

Step 2.

Open MMCS screen by pressing Open button. HDD is next to CD insert.

Hard drive is located right under black plastic cover labeled HDD. Using screwdriver gently push to the right and inwards. Cover should come off easily, do not apply force!

Step 3.
Now you’ll need a thorx size 8 to unscrew HDD mounts.

Please note that screws are permanently mounted to HDD casing. Once you unscrew, they won’t come off completely, but by now you should be able to get the drive out by pulling that plastic strap. Do not apply force here either. Moderate pull should do it.

Step 4.
HDD you pulled out is eclosed in a casing. Unscrew four screws, two per each side. You should end up with bare hard disk drive, which you can mount on regular laptop computer.

Hard drives are fragile mechanisms. Do your best not to drop your drive, keep it away from magnets, store in a dry place.

For cautious: Extracting hard drive does not void your warranty. MMCS with extracted drive will retain all settings you predefined (light, car alarm, wipers presets etc.). Radio works. I haven’t tried the CD thou.

This beauty is tech-loaded gizmo. It has built-in voice controlled bluetooth with cell freehand mode, full keyless operation and gorgeous 7 inch navigation system with 30GB hard drive inside. No wonder CNET nominated it 2007 Tech car of the year.

Personal ID in Lithuania [continued] October 2, 2008

While having my lunch, I saw other bank’s branch on the other side of the street. Short visit and I got away with receipt I needed. I spent 2 litas (0.7 euro). This is reasonable, far more reasonable than 8 litas for the very same operation. Do nowadays banks compete with each other?

Personal ID in Lithuania October 2, 2008

My passport is about to expire. That fact dragged me into Lithuanian migration department stupidities. There is a fixed fee of 10 litas (roughly 3 euro) for new ID. That money has to be wire-transferred to a given bank account. So far so good. BUT. One can’t just transfer the money, one must bring receipt from a bank. So I ended up traveling to nearest bank. Here comes the surprise,for cash deposit and the transfer they charge me 8 litas (roughly 2,3 euro). Stupid migration dep. In this day and age you can’t sort out wire-transfers?
I didn’t pay.

Lost in translation… September 29, 2008

No, this post is not about THIS great movie with now married Scarlett Johansson.
I like to watch movies and usually I pay extra attention at scenes involving computers or any kind of IT hacking. This time it is a bit different, nevertheless, I couldn’t miss this.

All new 2008 Knight Rider series, episode 1. A sign reads “Authorized personnel only” and has russian, french and some middle east language translations. I happen to know russian language. Russian translation, obviously generated by some automated translation tool, is incorrect. Wonder wether other two translations are correct :)
I found out it is not:
Google: только уполномоченному персоналу (correct translation)
Yahoo: утверженный персонал только (even worse than in movie)

So witch is it? Anyone? Contest for finding translation engine Knight Rider creators used is up. I’ll keep looking.
